Scottish Country Dance is a social dance form a bit like contra, but with more footwork. The name of the game is fun!
Upcoming classes/events:
November 17 - December 22: Intermediate dance series. Athens Community Center. 2 - 4 pm. $30 for the full series. Please register.
December 12: Columbus dance party, FREE. 7:30 pm (but we'll carpool up, leaving from the Athens Public Library at 5:45 pm).
December 29: Hogmanay ball prep (the easy half of the dances). 1:30 - 5 pm. $5. Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens, 184 Longview Heights Rd, Athens, Ohio. This isn't a class for never-before-danced folks, but it will be very friendly to I've-forgotten-a-lot dancers. We will assume you're familiar with footwork, progression, and basic figures (hands across, rights and lefts, circles, poussette, and allemande). Set list.
January 5, Hogmanay ball, 2:30 - 5:30 pm, $10 - $20 (sliding scale), Shade Community Center, 2380 Old US Route 33, Shade, Ohio. With live music by Boys of the Hock! Bring a potluck item to share. Program with videos and cribs here.
January 11, Free beginner class, noon - 2 pm, FREE, Athens Public Library, 30 Home St, Athens, OH. Want to get your brain and body moving and meet new friends? Scottish Country Dance is a social dance form a bit like contra, but with more footwork. The name of the game is fun! Who is this for: You! This class will be perfect if you've never danced before, if you're a pro with patience, or for anyone in the middle. No partner or experience needed. All folks 18+ are welcome. If you can walk briskly, you can dance! Attire: Clothes you can move in! Sneakers or ghillies are great on your feet. Dresses, kilts, shorts, or yoga pants are all perfect. Come dance with us!
(Our next beginner series will start in mid to late January 2025.)
About Scottish Dancing
Scottish Country Dance is a social dance form a bit like contra, but with more footwork. The name of the game is fun!
This living dance form dates back hundreds of years. To learn more, visit the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.
Once you learn the basics, you can enjoy classes, social dances, and balls all over the world. There are several groups dancing in Ohio and the surrounding area.
Our Athens group was new in 2021 and we hope to grow into an official twig of the Cincinnati branch soon. In the meantime, we consider ourselves a leaf of the Columbus twig.
